BLACK HISTORY MONTH ARTIST SPOTLIGHT: The Francesca Harper Project

Pentacle’s final feature of Black History Month is The Francesca Harper Project. FHP has been involved in many of Pentacle’s services including Fiscal Administration, ART, the Internship Program and the Dance Series at the Rubin Museum of Art in 2019.

What does Black History Month mean to you?

“Black History Month is always a special time for me. My father was a civil rights lawyer and my mother the director of the Alvin Ailey school so I grew up with an awareness of black empowerment and consciousness. I celebrate Black History in small ways every day, reminding myself about the legacy of all those who sacrificed to pave the way for me and the gifts that day showered me with as parents, educators, examples, and friends. I share rituals and stories about my ancestors with my daughter, dancers, and students and try to keep a sense of pride and empowerment moving forward to the next generation. I also received a Living History award years ago for Black History Month so it is particularly meaningful to me each year when February rolls around.”
