Congratulations to Social Tango for receiving a National Dance Project Touring Award from New England Foundation for the Arts. The grant goes to support a U.S. tour of the Argentina-based show with up to $35,000 in touring fee subsidies for the 2015-2016 season. Social Tango has been well-received nationally and internationally for bringing the rare illustration of the milonga experience (a social gathering where tango is danced) to the live concert stage.

Artistic Director Agustina Videla‘s choreography intertwines with live music, and interviews and portraits of genuine Buenos Aires milongueros in an effort to highlight the milonga community and the hidden dimensions of its subculture. Social Tango creates a complete immersive and atmospheric experience, delving the audience directly into the heart and spirit of tango with the passion of the milonga community experience.

NEFA launched the National Dance Project in 1996 to encourage the creation of new work in dance and the sharing of that work with audiences in communities throughout the United States. Since then, the program has distributed more than $27 million in grants and remains the only national program dedicated to supporting individual dance artists and companies in a broad range of genres, whether established or emerging. NEFA’s National Dance Project is supported with lead funding from the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation and The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, with additional support from the MetLife Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts, and funding for special initiatives from the Cultural Services of the French Embassy and the French American Cultural Exchange.
